Don't Let Anyone Convince You Not To Try
Many people have this misconception that they need to have a singing voice to sing. But, in reality, anyone can learn to sing with the right instruction.
The best way to start is by learning the basics of breathing and vocal technique. You can do this by taking vocal lessons and getting a singing coach. Learn how to use your diaphragm to produce sound. Practice your breathing exercises and learn how to warm up your voice before singing.
A common misconception is that you need to learn scales and chords before you can sing. This is not true. In order to begin learning how to sing, you need only understand the basics of breathing and vocal technique. It is also helpful to have some knowledge of scales, but this isn't necessary as long as you learn how to produce sound from your diaphragm. With these foundations in place, it's much less likely that a student will struggle when learning how to read music or play an instrument.
Before you begin, listen to a lot of different songs in many genres. This will help you settle on a style that best suits your voice and personality. Do you want to sing rock music? Opera? Maybe country and western or rhythm and blues suits your style best. If you don't know what style you want to sing, go with a pop cover tune. Your audience will love it and your voice will enjoy the sound of this genre as well.
Most of us are familiar with singing because we're in a choir, but you're not limited to just being in a choir. Music is everywhere so it's really easy to find someone who can teach you how to sing or who can help you learn more about singing techniques. You may need help from the teacher, instructor or even a vocal coach, but learning properly will improve your singing skills dramatically - and that's what matters!
You might want to start small and work your way up. You can try singing "Happy Birthday" or some lyrics from a song you already know in your head. Start by humming the melody of the song and sticking to just one note for each syllable. Repeat this until you've got all the words memorized, then go back and sing it again slowly. This will help you get acclimated with the tune of the song, but now that you're familiar with it, you can start to sing other words and progress to the full song. You can also try singing "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star." You might have heard your parents or grandparents singing it when they put you down for a nap. Singing this lullaby will help jump-start your voice and get your throat warmed up with a little bit of tension relief.
